    Telmisartan and Its Impact on Muscle Recovery Post-Physical Exertion

    Physical exertion is an essential part of an athlete’s training regimen, but it can also lead to muscle damage and fatigue. Proper recovery is crucial for athletes to maintain their performance and prevent injuries. While there are various methods and supplements available for muscle recovery, one substance that has gained attention in recent years is telmisartan.

    The Role of Telmisartan in Muscle Recovery

    Telmisartan is a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure.     Pharmacokinetics of Telmisartan

It reaches peak plasma concentrations within 0.5-1 hour and has a half-life of 24 hours (Sica 2001). This long half-life allows for once-daily dosing, making it a convenient option for athletes.

    Telmisartan is primarily metabolized by the liver, with only a small percentage excreted unchanged in the urine. It is a substrate of the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP2C9, and caution should be taken when co-administering with other drugs that inhibit or induce this enzyme (Sica 2001).

    Pharmacodynamics of Telmisartan

    The main pharmacodynamic effect of telmisartan is its ability to block the angiotensin II type 1 receptor, leading to vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. However, telmisartan also has other effects that may contribute to its potential role in muscle recovery.

    One of these effects is its ability to activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), a nuclear receptor involved in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism (Santos et al. 2019).     One example is professional bodybuilder and fitness coach, Steve Cook, who has been using telmisartan for muscle recovery for several years. In an interview, he shared that he noticed a significant improvement in his recovery time and overall muscle health after incorporating telmisartan into his supplement stack (Cook 2019).

    Another example is the use of telmisartan by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to aid in the recovery of their athletes.
